Membership at SCCYC

Club Membership

If you are considering membership in SCCYC, please contact our membership chair, who will answer your questions and can meet at the club to chat about how SCCYC can enhance your yachting experience. You may also drop in at any time and visit when members are in the clubhouse, and they will welcome you and show you around.  Our club normally has an open house and an Officer of the Day on duty from 1800-2200hrs on Fridays, 1200-1700hrs on Saturdays and Sundays. These are good times to stop in and ask any questions you might have.

Membership in SCCYC is open to those who are interested in promoting the development and enjoyment of yachting in all its aspects. Our all-volunteer club promotes sailboat racing, cruising and social activities. Our members include avid big-boat sailors, dinghy racers, and cruisers of power boats and sailboats.  While most members are boat owners, non-boat owners will find friendly skippers to sail with, as well as an active social scene to share the joys of yachting The fact that we are a member-run volunteer club means that anyone can make a difference and everyone does.

Membership applications require sponsorship from three current members. An initiation fee of $120 is payable upon approval of the application. Dues are $200/quarter.

We look forward to welcoming you aboard!

Benefits of Membership

For over ninety years, SCCYC has cultivated an active and personable membership. Membership is designed to encourage individual and family participation in a variety of activities, including yacht racing, cruising, social and educational events. The atmosphere is always casual and the objectives always the same… to enjoy!

Club Facilities

The South Coast Corinthian Clubhouse is like a second home to its members. It is a come-as-you-are, self-service establishment, open 24 hours a day. Facilities include a stocked bar, cold beer and a comfortable lounge area. The Club has a five-ton hoist and mast-up dry storage for dinghies. The Club’s Port Captain  will assist new members in obtaining wet slips from neighboring anchorages or dry storage space in the Club’s yard. While visiting neighboring ports, SCCYC members also have access to the facilities of other yacht clubs with “reciprocal” privileges.
The "Shallow Water" bar was built by SCCYC volunteers.

Social Events

Social activities are spearheaded by the members, who plan numerous events offering fun, camaraderie and relaxation. Regular e-mail messages announce such events as Friday night stories, brunches, sunset barbeques, club parties and cruises. Ukulele night has become a big hit, and our SCCYC strummers meet up monthly at the clubhouse. Holiday parties at SCCYC have traditionally been special events for club members, their families, and guests. The Commodore’s installation dinner and the Opening Day Ceremonies are opportunities for SCCYC members to experience the annual traditions that make yacht-club membership unique.

The clubhouse is also available for members to hold special events such as birthday parties, anniversary parties, wedding showers, baby showers and the like.  The club is not used for professional events and even when a member’s special event is held, the club remains open to all members.  The club prides itself on being the friendliest club in Santa Monica Bay.

Yacht Racing

SCCYC is a sponsor of races in the South Bay area and is particularly known as a sponsor of dinghy racing. Annual races open to all classes include the Shallow Water series, the Fletcher Memorial Race to Catalina, and the Outlook Trophy race. The Outlook Trophy race is the oldest and only pursuit regatta in Marina Del Rey. These regattas are held to test their skipper’s and crews’ determination, skill and training against the other boat’s luck. SCCYC members race their boats in races held along the West Coast in PHRF and Cruiser class races in boats from 20’ to 48’. Several of our members have competed in the Transpacific Cup Race and other famous distance races.  Our dinghy racers have competed in national and world championships.  The Club’s racing associations include US Sailing, The Southern California Yachting Association, and the association of Santa Monica Bay Yacht Clubs. These affiliations give SCCYC members the opportunity to compete in races throughout California and the United States. Man or woman, novice or pro, SCCYC is proud of its racing heritage and the individuals that make it happen.

One Design Regattas

SCCYC has always enthusiastically supported one-design racing and is proud to be hosting the Sunstroke series, a 20 week long series from May through mid-September where dinghy sailors compete in 5 races each Thursday and return to the club to recount the evening over drinks and dinner. The “Outlook Trophy” race is the oldest and only Portsmouth handicapped regatta in Marina Del Rey. Throughout the year, SCCYC sponsors several regattas, including our “One-Design” weekend. SCCYC is also the the home of Lido 14 and Coronado 15 fleets. SCCYC recognizes the international popularity of one-design racing and will continue to be one of the driving forces behind this fine sport in Marina Del Rey.

Cruising

Cruising is as popular with Club members as is racing. Sailboat and powerboat owners enjoy trips to Catalina, Paradise Cove, and King Harbor. The biggest annual cruise event is currently the multi-club cruise to the Corsair Yacht Club in Emerald Bay held in June of each year. Friends from other clubs join us on the beach for hiking and games, a big barbeque and campfire with traditional singing. The weekend finishes with a big no-host breakfast bash. Club cruises are a growing activity as we put the global pandemic in our rear view.

Club Meetings

General membership dinner meetings are generally held at 7:00pm on the 3rd weekend of every month. Prospective members are cordially invited to attend these meetings to become acquainted with the Club and see the facilities. First Friday is story night, this is also a great opportunity for prospective members to share in fun and interesting stories from members and guest speakers.

Heritage

In 1932, a hearty group of sailors sharing yachting and social interest founded the South Coast Corinthian Yacht Club. They launched their handmade boats over the sands of Santa Monica beach and had their membership meetings in ocean-front cabins. The facilities were minimal, the enthusiasm was great. That club persists today as the oldest yacht club in Santa Monica Bay. Our current clubhouse was completed in 2020 and the members continue to work on club improvements. The rich history of the club is found here.

Getting Involved

Membership in SCCYC is generally open to those who have a demonstrated interest in participating and promoting the development and enjoyment of yachting in all its aspects, including racing, cruising and social activities. While boat owners are welcomed to enjoy the many benefits to membership, non-boat owners will find friendly skippers to sail with, as well as an active social scene to share the joys of boating in Santa Monica Bay and beyond. The fact that we are a member-run volunteer club means that anyone can make a difference and everyone does.
