Sea Lion Pups

FYI

Recently, sick and malnourished sea lion pups are stranding themselves on Southern California beaches in unusually large numbers. The City of Rancho Palos Verdes is receiving reports of ill sea lion pups on Rancho Palos Verdes Beach and Abalone Cove Shoreline Park Beach.

If you encounter a stranded or sick sea lion, please follow these instructions:

1. Stay away from the animals for your own safety, and that of the animal.

2. Call Marine Animal Rescue at 1-800-39-WHALE (Even though many rescue facilities are at or near capacity right now, the public is still advised to call so that the rescue staff can assess and prioritize the situation).

3. Do not feed or urge the animals back into the water.

4. The general public must remain at least 50 feet away from these animals, as they are a federally protected species.
